The Endless Dream

I've always dreamt of soaring through the skies, the wind in my face and all my troubles evaporating behind me. I was once free, like the rest of my brethren, until I was cornered in my own home. A man in a green T-shirt grabbed me by the torso… that's all I remember from that day. For the past year I've been living in a cage like a wild animal. I try to scream, yet only tweets spill from my beak. I miss my family, I miss living freely with no risks, although I've begun to grow rather fond of my new owner. He would always bring me seeds to feed upon, and refill my water bowl. I've started to notice that my owner wasn't coming home as frequently, and when he did, he always had a bottle of pills in his hand. He kept coming and going until one day, he stopped. He never came home to feed me or care for me. “Had he abandoned me?” I thought to myself “had I given my love and affection to this HUMAN only to leave me for dead?” I started to feel dizzy from the lack of food. I haven't eaten in four days. I lay on the floor, half dead, waiting for the cold grasp of death to take me.

I woke up with a jump. “Was I alive?” I wondered. A young woman walked over to my cage, with a bag of sunflower seeds in her right hand. She proceeded to pour the seeds into my bowl, and patted me on the head. I fluttered my wings with happiness. I kind of liked my new home, I had a window behind my cage with a beautiful view of the city below me. I don't know where the man with the green shirt went, but I hope he's safe.
